What counts as urgent
Shut out, locked in, or a lock that has given up
Ring at any hour for any of these:
- Locked out: the door pulled shut behind you, or the keys left on the inside of a double-locked door.
- Lost keys: dropped, stolen with a bag, or simply gone, so you cannot get in and someone else might.
- A broken key: snapped off in the cylinder, with half a key in your hand.
- A jammed lock: the key goes in and will not turn, or turns and the door stays shut.
- Locked in: a door you cannot open from the inside, which is never left until morning.
Keys locked in a car are urgent too, and have their own page about locked cars. A door that has been forced is dealt with on the page about break-ins.
The call-out, step by step
Ring, journey, door, lock: the call-out in order
-
You ring
Say where you are and what has happened. A photo of the lock and a map pin on WhatsApp help.
-
An honest journey time
Given for your address and that hour. If it is long, you hear it now rather than at the door.
-
At the door
The lock is looked at, you show something that ties you to the address, and the price is agreed before anything is touched.
-
Opened, then locked again
Through the lock where possible. If the cylinder has to go, a new one is fitted there and then so the door locks tonight.
Being found in Alcoi
Why the first question is often “which bridge?”
Alcoi is built across the ravines of five rivers, and its barris are joined by bridges. The Canalejas viaduct runs 54 metres above the Molinar; the Pont de Sant Jordi carries l’Eixample over the ravine to the Centre. A map pin dropped from a phone can land on a bridge while you are standing in the street below it.
Name the bridge or the square you are nearest, say whether you are on the street above or below, and if you are in the old town, where the van can stop: in the Barri de la Sang the streets were laid out long before cars. The guide on giving directions in Alcoi goes through it.
In winter, ring before you are frozen. January nights here average around 4 °C, and some winters bring snow to the hills round the town. If you are shut out of a house in l’Estepar, Baradello or Montesol on a night like that, there is a guide for a lockout on a snowy night.
Where, at night
The same service in every barri and every village
From Batoi to Font Dolça, from the station estates of Zona Nord to the sloping streets of Zona Alta, and out to Cocentaina, Muro, Ibi, Onil, Castalla and the small villages of El Comtat. The list of barris and towns covered has all 31 towns.
If you would rather send a photo than talk, use WhatsApp from the contact page. For a lock that works but you no longer trust, you do not need a night call-out: book a new cylinder for a day that suits you.
Before you ring
Five things worth knowing before the van sets off
Can you tell me the exact minute you will be at my door?
No, and be wary of anyone who does. You are told honestly, on the phone, how long the journey looks from where the van is at that moment. A flat in Santa Rosa at midnight and a house above Benilloba are different journeys.
The key snapped in the cylinder. Should I try to pull the broken piece out?
Leave it. Tweezers and pins usually push the piece further in. Keep the half you still have: it helps to see where it broke.
Is a night call-out to Cocentaina or Muro handled the same way as one in Alcoi?
Yes. All of El Comtat and the rest of l’Alcoià are covered at night too. The only difference is the journey, and you are told what it is before anyone sets off.
What will you ask me to show before the door is opened?
Something that links you to the address: an ID with that address, a rental contract, a utility bill, or a neighbour or the owner who can vouch for you. If it is all inside, it can be checked once the door is open.
The lock worked last night and this morning it will not turn. Is that an emergency?
If you cannot get in or out, yes. If the door is shut and you are inside with another way out, it can usually wait for a booked visit, which is planned work.
Often needed next
After the door is open
-
Getting a door open without damage
Most front doors are opened through the lock or the latch, with nothing broken. The drill is the last resort, used only when you agree to it.
-
A high-security lock
A forced door made to close and lock on the first visit. Then, when you are ready, a stronger cylinder, a guard plate or a high-security lock.
-
Lock repairs on a modern door
New euro cylinders, anti-snap and anti-bump upgrades, worn multipoint locks on modern doors, and PVC or aluminium doors that no longer lock. Booked for a day and time that suit you.
