This is what usually happens with each, and what it means for the lock. | The door | How it is usually opened | The lock afterwards | | --- | --- | --- | | Pulled shut, latch only | The latch is slipped back from outside, through the gap at the frame. | Untouched. Out in the urbanisations, l’Estepar, Baradello, Montesol, the doors are those of detached houses, often with a gate as well. ## When drilling is the right answer, and who decides Sometimes the cylinder resists everything else, or there is a child or a hob on the other side and time matters more than the cylinder. When the door was only latched, or the lock could be picked, yes: nothing inside the lock has changed. When the cylinder had to be drilled, it is replaced on the spot and you are given the keys of the new one. ### Is an armoured door impossible to open without destroying it? No, but it takes longer and the options are fewer. Many security cylinders can still be bypassed. When one cannot, only the cylinder is drilled, never the door leaf, and a new cylinder goes in. ### The door is open but the bolt is still out. What happened? On multipoint doors the handle sometimes has to be lifted fully to throw or withdraw the bolts. If the gearbox inside the door is worn, it can jam half way. That is a repair, not an opening. ### Can you open the door of a flat I rent if the landlord is away? Yes, with your rental contract or another document that ties you to the address.
